Shakespeare Week is a national annual celebration, coordinated by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in which to introduce children to Shakespeare's life, works and times in a fun and engaging way.
Schools, families and organisations work together in order to inspire children through Shakepeare's stories, language and heritage.  See the Shakespeare week website for further information.

Come and take a look at some of the resources available on display in the LRC about Shakespeare and the organisations that are associated with him.

International Women's Day

International Women's Day takes place this weekend with the theme this year of 'Make It Happen'.

All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.  The theme of Make IT Happen is to encourage effective action for advancing and recognising women.

There are number of events taking place this weekend including a free event at Sheffield Town Hall on Saturday.

In the LRC we have a display for International Women's Day highlighting a number of women's achievements, along with showcasing a number of texts related to or written by women including Monologues for Women, the graphic novel version of the Diary of Anne Frank and I am Malala.  You can also check out Emma Watson's recent Gender Equality Speech at the UN or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's inspiring TEDx Talk about feminism (which was recently sampled in BeyoncĂ©'s Flawless track).

Or why not get involved in the This Girl Can campaign which encourages women into sport.

International Women's Day is a day not only to recognise women's achievements, but also to recognise what women can achieve and we encourage you all to get involved, take action and Make It Happen

Free Books on World Book Day

Today is World Book Day - a day to celebrate and encourage reading for pleasure.  As part of World Book Day we have a display in the LRC highlighting some new book releases along with this year's Quick Reads (Quick Reads are short books written by big name authors that are specifically designed to be easy to read - they are the same as mainstream books in every respect but are simply shorter for those that don't always have the time to read or are less confident in their reading skills).  All the books on the display are available to loan so please feel free to grab whichever copy takes your fancy.

As part of World Book Day we are also giving away book tokens that entitle each student to one of the free World Book Day £1 Books or you can use it to put £1 towards any book of your choice, so make sure to pick up your token today and take it to your local book shop.

We are also giving away a number of free books on a first come first served basis - so hurry, make sure you get in early to claim your freebie!

Finally - don't forget the LRC has an extensive fiction collection, including graphic novels, new releases and much more - all these titles can be borrowed for a 3 week period so if the free books or displayed books are not up your street - there are many more you can choose from.  If you are struggling to decide what to read, please speak to a member of LRC staff who will be happy to offer you a recommendation.

Happy Reading!!
