Black History Month

October is Black History Month, which has been marked in the UK for more than 30 years with the aim of highlighting and celebrating the achievement and contributions of the black community in the UK.

The official Black History Month website features loads of information, news and details of events taking place across the region.

You can also find out here about the incredible things that 12 women, in particular, have done for Britain.

In the LRC we have a display dedicated to Black History Month, featuring short biographies about key people, along with a number of relevant resources - please take the time to come and check this out.  All the resources on the display can be borrowed, just ask a member of staff.

Welcome and Hello

Welcome to the first LRC blog post of the academic year.  We would very much like to say welcome to all our new students and hello again to all our returning students.  We hope you have all had a fantastic summer and are now all geared up and ready to learn.

The LRC has had a big clean up over the summer months and you will find many new books on the shelves - all in line with the new linear A-Levels.  But, if you think we are missing anything, do let us know either in person or via one of our suggestion boxes so we can make sure to order further titles in.

The big change this summer is how we loan laptops.  This September we are introducing self-service laptop loans.  As before, these laptops are for use in the LRC only and can be borrowed for up to 2 hours.

You will find the new exciting purple self-service locker on the upper level of the LRC.  You will need your student ID card to borrow a laptop and full instructions are on the touch screen - however if you are struggling, please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.

We would love to hear your feedback about this new service - so please let us know what you think.

See you all soon.

CILIP Carnegie Medal Winner 2017

WINNER OF THE CILIP CARNEGIE MEDAL 2017

Front Cover

On the 80th anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) Carnegie Medal, the book Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys was announced as the winner on Monday 19 June.  It's an inspirational novel that is based on a true story from the Second World War about the German ship the Wilhelm Gustloff which was sunk in port in early 1945. The ship had over 9000 civilian refugees, including children on board and nearly all were drowned.  Ruta Sepetys brilliantly imagines the unforgettable stories of four young people who are each haunted by their own dark secret.

If you are looking for something different to read after your exams and studies, a copy of the book is available in the LRC to borrow.  Further new fiction books are also on display in the LRC, with an outline of the story by each book.

A reminder to students that ALL books (including both LRC and departmental books) must be returned by no later than Friday 30th June.

However you don’t have to wait until then, once your exam is over, don’t carry them around for longer than you need too – return them straight away.

Can you please make sure that you return ALL books to the LRC and not to the department.  This enables us to effectively clear your account on our system and ensures you don’t get any unnecessary fines and chasing letters/e-mails.

Dementia Awareness Week

Dementia Awareness Week

14 to 20 May 2017

LET'S UNITE FOR DEMENTIA

This year Dementia Awareness Week takes place from the 14 to 20 May 2017.  The Alzheimer's Society is asking everyone in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to unite against dementia.

Dementia is set to be the biggest 21st century killer.  However, awareness and understanding remains low and many families are facing it alone.

During the week, the Alzheimer's Society wants everyone to come together and take action.  By uniting everyone can raise awareness, offer help and understanding, improve care and urgently find a cure.

Come and take a look at the display in the LRC, as we raise awareness about dementia.  There are some free booklets and postcards available to take away published by the Alzheimer's Society, as well as some fiction and film tie-in books about people with dementia and books on dementia.  Further information and publications can be found on The Alzheimer's Society website.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week

8 to 14 May 2017

Surviving or Thriving?

Today is the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, which is organised by the Mental Health Foundation. The theme for the week is Surviving or Thriving? Good mental health is more than the absence of a mental health problem.  That's why during this week, mental health is being looked at from a new perspective.  Instead of asking why so many people live with mental health problems, the week will seek to uncover why too few people are thriving with good mental health.

Come and take a look at the display in the LRC depicting information from the Mental Health Foundation website, as well as some resources available in the LRC to borrow including some self help guides on dealing with anxiety, confidence and stress.  Further information, publications and resources can be found on the Mental Health Foundation website.

The National Apprenticeship Week is co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and traineeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economyThis year marks the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week and will celebrate the achievements of apprentices over the last decade. The overall theme of the week is 'Ladder of Opportunity' which will focus on the progression routes of apprenticeships, traineeships through to higher and degree apprenticeships.  Further information about the week, as well as on apprenticeships and traineeships can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Come and take a look at the display in the LRC, which has further details about local and specialist apprenticeship providers, as well as about National Apprenticeship Week.  If you are interested in an apprenticeship further information is also available in the Careers Library based in the LRC.  See or email the Careers Librarian, Mandy Barker for further details.

National Careers Week
National Careers Week is run as a non-for-profit company to promote the importance of good careers education in schools and colleges, funded and backed by a number of volunteers with a wealth of experience from education, business and careers guidance. The aim is to provide a focus on careers guidance and support to students who may be about to leave college and enter full-time employment.  At a time of high youth unemployment there has never been a bigger need for careers guidance to be promoted and celebrated in education.  National Careers Week provides a platform to advise and inspire the next generation as they enter the world of work.  Further details and resources can be found on the National Careers Week website.

World Book Day - 2 March 2017

Happy World Book Day!

It's the 20th anniversary of World Book Day this year, a day to celebrate and encourage reading for pleasure.  As part of World Book Day there is a display in the LRC highlighting some of the Writes of Passage books nominated by World Book Day participants along with this year's Quick Reads. (Quick Reads are short books written by big name authors that are specifically designed to be easy to read - they are the same as mainstream books in every respect but are simply shorter for those that don't always have the time to read or are less confident in their reading skills.) All the books on the display are available to loan so please feel free to borrow any copy that takes your fancy.

Finally don't forget the LRC also has an extensive fiction collection, including graphic novels, new releases and much more... All titles can be borrowed for three weeks so if the displayed books are not to your taste there are many more you can choose from.  If you are struggling to decide what to read, please speak to a member of LRC staff who will be happy to offer you a recommendation.

Happy reading!

Safer Internet Day 2017

Today is Safer Internet Day, a day dedicated to promoting the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

We have a great display in the LRC with lots of useful resources to help you be safe.

In particular, you can pick up a free checklist for SnapChat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter giving you lots of great tips regarding privacy settings, blocking and reporting and much more.

You can also find some top tips and advice on the Safer Internet Day website.

To mark Safer Internet Day how about spending some time checking the privacy setting on your social media accounts, having a browse through your 'friends' and removing anyone that you don't really know and double checking those photos and posts and taking down any that might be harming your digital footprint.

If you need any further information on how to be safe and responsible online - please get in touch with Emma Hadfield in the LRC.
