Puzzle of the Day

Numeracy Week will be held in College from 10^th – 14^th March so look out for all the competitions and events that will be advertised throughout the week.

On the run up to and during Numeracy Week there will be a Maths Puzzle of the Day competition where you can win £10 each day.  The first Puzzle will be available on Monday 3^rd March.

Each day over the next fortnight a new puzzle will be attached to every door in College (alongside being placed on Moodle/posters around college/LRC Blog/e-mail).

All students are encouraged to have a go at solving the puzzle each day to be in with a chance to win £10.

Entry forms can be collected from the LRC – and all entries should be submitted in the LRC before the end of each day.

Half Term Opening

Just to remind you all that we are open during half term for those of you that want to come and use the LRC facilities for study and revision.

We will be open from 9.30am every morning and closing at 3.30pm.

However, please be aware that computer access will be very limited on the Friday (28th February) due to essential maintenance works taking place.

Safer Internet Day

Today is Safer Internet Day and the theme for this year is 'let's create a better internet day together'.

Here in the LRC we have put together a display containing lots of useful e-safety tips and information.  There are leaflets to take away about 'keeping smart on your mobile' and 'keeping smart online' along with a helpsheet about 'sexting' and what to do if you have shared intimate images of yourself with others.

In line with this year's Safer Internet Day theme, we encourage you to think about the information you post online - ask yourself, does it give a good reflection of the type of person you are?  Also think about who you are sharing information with - do you really know all the people you are 'friends' with online and are your privacy settings set to private - or are you sharing all your posts and photos publicly to everyone.

Safer Internet Day also creates a good opportunity for you to think about any younger family members in your home.  More and more children are accessing social networking sites these days with little thought about the risks.  This is the perfect time to help them to be safe online too.  Find out what social networking sites they are using and how, advise them on how to set up their privacy settings correctly and help them to understand responsible internet use.

And finally, please remember here at TRC we are here to help you.  If you need advice or tips on creating the best possible image of yourself online, call into the LRC and speak to the E-Safety Officer.  If you are feeling threatened, bullied or at risk online, please don't suffer in silence, speak to any member of staff in College who can give you the assistance you need.

LGBT History Month

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month takes place every year in February and aims to celebrate the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.

LGBT History Month provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Britain and Northern Ireland.  We have created a display in the LRC to help start the learning process containing a number of relevant resources and points of information.

Please take the time to check out this display and feel free to borrow any of the resources.

Register to Vote

Wednesday 5 February 2014 marks Britain’s first Voter Registration Day designed to ensure that young people of 16 and over are registered to vote when they become eligible (currently 18) to do so.

It is to be an annual event. (5 February in 1833 marked the first sitting of the reformed House of Commons produced by the changes made to voting laws by 1832 Reform Act, which was the first in a series of extensions of the voting rights culminating in 1918 and 1928 with the granting of the vote to all men and all women over 21; the age was lowered to 18 in 1969.)  Like the later changes, the 1832 Reform Act was partly the result of people protesting for the right to vote – something that we should never forget; the democratic system we’ve lived in throughout our lives was a distant and cherished goal of men and women without political rights in Britain even in the comparatively recent past. Not to ensure you’re registered or not to vote is to undervalue democracy- just think of the alternatives.

Anyone aged 16 and over can fill in the registration forms which will be available in the LRC and on the Bite the Ballot website and we encourage you all to do so.

Open As Normal

We have had a few people ask what our opening hours are during mock exam week - well they are the same as usual.  So don't worry we won't be closing early and you can still visit the LRC until 5.15pm today (Tuesday) and Thursday.  Until 4.30pm on Wednesday and 3.00pm on Friday.

New Term, New Print Credit and New Display

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to the new term. 

Normal opening hours in the LRC have resumed, with opening at 8.15am every morning and a late closing at 5.15pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, which I'm sure you will all be needing on the run up to the mock exams!!

You should all have noticed as well that everyone received a £10 print credit top up at the start of term.  Please be careful what you print and only print what you need as this credit needs to last you the full term.  However, don't despair if you do need further credit, you can still purchase some from the LRC.

And finally, look out for new displays in the LRC.  Next week you will find a display on World Religion Day which takes place on the 19th January 2014.  World Religion Day aims to increase understanding of all different religions and you will find a variety of books available on the display about many different religions.
