October is Black History Month, and to recognise
this we now have a display in the LRC, celebrating notable black people such as
Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
Black History Month was founded by historian Carter G
Woodson in 1926, to highlight the history and culture of black people in
America, which he argued, “were overlooked, ignored, and even suppressed by the writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them."(Current Biography 1944, p.742).
The resources we have on display will be very useful for
students studying history, but also fascinating and insightful to all, so make
sure you come and take a look.
