Help Wanted

Well the inductions are over for another year - we apologise for all the disruption to services, but as you have probably discovered we are back to normal and the lower level LRC area can be used for studying and use of resources.

So back to business - the LRC is currently seeking student volunteers to help out with a bit of shelving.  Volunteers are wanted for about 30 minutes to an hour each week at a time to suit them.

So if any students out there are interested - please contact Emma Hadfield in the first instance either via the College e-mail - or pop in and see her in the LRC.

Friday 12 September 2014

Inductions

Well, that's the first week of term done and dusted!  It's been great to see so many new faces this week and to welcome back some of the more familiar faces!

So what's happening next week.......

We will be running the new student LRC inductions on the lower level throughout all of next week.  We look forward to welcoming each and every new student through out doors and hopefully you will all leave having a better understanding of all the amazing things the LRC has to offer.

What this will also mean though is that there will be quite a lot of disruption to the area and a limited amount of study spaces available.  We apologise for this, but we will ensure that the upper level is fully functional to ensure you have a place to study and access computers.

Friday 5 September 2014

Shiny New Term!!!

Hello and welcome to the shiny new academic year.  We hope you have all had an exciting and restful summer and you are back raring to go and ready to learn.

So to start the term off - here's what we have changed over the summer months.

First and foremost - we've changed the chairs!

Gone are those tired red chairs.......
And say hello to the shiny new chairs......
And we've thrown in a sofa in the Fiction Corner too.....

We've purchased loads of new books, with some departments having a complete overhaul of their collection - for instance the Law section is now fully changed with a wealth of new current and up to date books.

We've also subscribed to some new e-resources -  particularly we now have access to the Philip Allan Review Magazines Online Archive which can be accessed from both home and College.  You can access this resource via the E-Resources list (under the LRC tab on Moodle).  If you need help with this just ask a member of LRC staff.

The LRC is back to normal opening hours as from Monday - and please remember the LRC is not a social area and is a place to study and revise quietly.  We discovered from our Student Survey last year that 60% of students were fed up with all the noise and disruption in the LRC, so be aware that we will be clamping down on this from the start to ensure we can maintain a quiet environment for you all.

So all that is left to say is good luck for the start of term and we look forward to seeing you all soon.

LRC Survey

As the end of term is on the horizon, we are looking to find out about your experiences this academic year of the Learning Resource Centre.

We would really appreciate it if you could spare 5 minutes to complete a short survey about the Learning Resource Centre to help us make improvements to the resources and services provided.

The survey can be found under the MyPod tab on Moodle, entitled LRC Survey – see image below (you will need to log into Moodle first to access this).

Many thanks in advance for helping us with this.

Back Up Your Work

It's that time of year again when you need to start thinking about backing up all your student work that is currently stored on your Z:Drive/Subject Drives.

"Image courtesy of Stuart Miles / FreeDigitalPhotos.net"

You should back up your work to a USB memory device (which can be purchased from the LRC) or ideally onto OneDrive (within your email account). We recommend saving work to your OneDrive account as it is far more reliable that any external memory devices and is accessible wherever you have an internet connection.

All files stored on your Z;Drive/Subject Drive (i.e., Student Language Collaboration; A2 Computing: Art: Student Council, etc.....) will be deleted by the end of July 2014!

So don't delay - back up your work today!!

Friday 2 May 2014

New Term & Time to Get Revising

Welcome back to the new and final term of the academic year.

By now you should have all received your final print credit top up which should hopefully see you through to the end.  However, I have noticed a lot of you printing loads of practice exam papers, so if you do need more credit, don't despair - you can pay for further credit and can put as little as 10p on, if you need it.

So what is coming up this term - well, it's exam time so make the most of the LRC for your revision.  We have just created a new display that provides lots of revision tips and advice, useful resources and details of the all important exam timetable.

Revision by Raindog Accessed via Flickr
